History
Numerical scouts was founded a year ago (January 2019) with the original intention for it be a casual reading group where people would volunteer to lecture on special topics involving scientific computing. The main idea here is that there would be several others interested in learning the topic. However, in thinking how numerical scouts could most benefit grad students at UCSB, the vision of numerical scouts has turned into the following: A relaxed and welcoming research community that promotes thinking outside the box, provides opportunity to practice effective communication with peer (constructive) criticism, acts as an incubator for collaborative learning and research, and supply students with more leadership opportunities. Along with this last point, numerical& scouts can help to promote academic culture that values leadership whose core focus is building trust and understanding while investing in the development and growth of those lower on the totem pole. Finally, the numerical scouts provide opportunities to promote collaborative community-driven learning that takes steps away from standard lecture format and makes resulting material built in a more open source format. These materials will be made by a subset of the people that are intended to benefit from them most. We will write the notes we wish to see in the world (for graduate [or interested undergraduate] students interested in scientific computing).
Goals/Objectives
Numerical scouts also serves as a means to:
- Prepare conference presentations
- Brainstorm new ideas
- Learn new skills peer-to-peer
- Develop both written and oral communication skills
- Those interested in a topic being presented could write LaTeX notes to be shared on our website. Both the writer and presenters could be authors and the resulting notes would be cite-able.
- Market graduate students
- For each event we will generate a flyer like the ones in the event page.
